PURPOSE:To read any pages in different documents and to edit them by generating new documents from page-by-page picture information corresponding to an inputted retrieval code and a page number. CONSTITUTION:When the retrieval code and page number, for instance, '2', of the document X are inputted from a key board 23, a CPU 12 reads out a corresponding memory address from a magnetic disk 28, makes an optical disk device 22 to reproduce an optical disk 19, and stores the read-out picture information in the corresponding memory area 14a of a page buffer 14. When the retrieval code and the page number '1' corresponding to the document Y are inputted, the corresponding picture information is stored in the memory area 14b of the page buffer 14, and picture information corresponding to the 2nd page of the document X and picture information corresponding to the 1st page of the document X are displayed in widows A and B, respectively. When the registration of the 3rd document Z is specified through the keyboard 23, picture information composed of two pages displayed in the windows A and B is registered.
