A chair or bed for the disabled has a frame (10, 70, 85) having two side members, and flexible belts (11-13, 71, 88) extending around the side members and providing a supporting surface for a patient. At least one of the belts (11-13, 71, 88) has its ends connected by cables (47, 49) to a rocking lever (45) of a tensioning device (15, 72, 90) detachably mounted on the frame (10, 70, 85) below the supporting surface, the rocking lever (45) being pivotable by the device (15, 72, 90) to periodically tighten and then slacken each belt (11-13, 71, 85), so as to support the body of the patient at different places in succession and thereby reduce the risk of pressure sores. In a bed each belt (71) is slackened in turn while the remaining belts are held taut. One form of chair has a seat cover (86) provided with an aperture (87) for relieving pressure on the ischial tuberosities of a patient, a flexible belt (88) extending across the aperture (87) on the underside of the seat cover (86), the belt (88) having a pad (89) of soft material mounted on the aperture (87), and tensioning mechanism (90) for periodically tightening and slackening the belt (88). |
