PURPOSE:To wipe a steel strip surface without giving damage such as scratching flaws and slipping flaws thereto by blowing high-velocity air to the steel strip surface, then passing the air along the surface of the steel strip, thereby wiping the surface. CONSTITUTION:The steel strip 1 traveling in an arrow X direction is rolled by a rolling mill 5 and is coiled on a coiler 4. The rolling mill lubricant supplied just before the rolling mill 5 is held stuck on the surface of the steel strip 1 during this time and the steel strip advances in this state into a cover 9 of a wiping device body. The air fed from a blast pipe 13 past an air chamber 14 is blown from nozzles 7 and the greater part of the air is discharged by flowing to the upper stream side where packing forming plates 8a of a labyrinth packing 8 are fewer and the resistance is lower. Since the space between the packing forming plates 8a and the steel strip surface is slight, the air is increased in the flow rate to a high rate and is passed along the steel strip surface. The rolling mill lubricant stagnates on the upper stream side and is incorporated into the air in the form of fine particles and oil smoke by contacting the high velocity air. Such rolling mill lubricant is discharged and is thus wiped away from the steel strip surface. |
