The invention relates to a safety device for electrical window lifters of motor vehicles and other automatically actuated closing devices of windows and doors for preventing serious accidents as a result of the risk of jamming and pinching during the closing operation. The invention is characterised in that a flexible electrical contact strip which can be produced very cheaply and has wires inserted into soft rubber and which can serve at the same time as a seal is used. If the contact strip is dented at any point, a relay is cut in and reverses the closing operation. The jamming or pinching of persons or objects is thereby reliably prevented. The same electrical contact strip designed as a seal can also be used as a contact-maker for alarm or other safety devices. A further claim of the invention relates to the use of a short-time retentivity relay for the abovementioned device, in which the relay release time can be influenced or selected by the use of a suitable short-time retentivity material and by the choice of the exciting current.
