An apparatus for producing lids for the airtight closure of containers, for example food containers, by punching out from a sheet (12). The latter is provided with an embossing, which roughens its smooth planar surfaces and, within the surface area of the lid, there is arranged in each case a relatively small smooth area provided for applying information, such as an inscription, indication of the date or the like. The said apparatus has a sheet-roller holder (13), a roughening embossing station (14) and a punching-out station (37). At the same time, according to the invention there is a smoothing embossing station (16) arranged between the roughening embossing station (14) and the punching-out station (37). <IMAGE>
