Chopped or coarsely broken straw, when mixed in the soil or lying on the soil in a layer, requires a relatively long time for decomposition, namely biological and chemical disintegration. During this time, toxic substances escape from the straw and are highly detrimental to the germination and growth of the introduced seed. Splicing open and shortening the stalks to form spliced chaff make it possible to accelerate the decomposition of straw considerably, so that sowing can be carried out a short time after harvesting. The treatment of straw to form spliced chaff is carried out by means of fine-toothed rotating tools.
