The device includes a pressure-relief opening in the tank wall (1) and a closing member. The pressure-relief opening is the clearance of a passage (2), the neck of which projects from the side of the tank wall (1) opposed to the excess gas pressures and tapers continuously. The closing member is a stopper (3) which is inserted into the passage (2) and is under a retaining force which is opposed to the excess gas pressures. The magnitude of the retaining force is essentially determined by the work of deformation required to open out the passage neck. Provided in the back of the stopper (3) is a locking means (4) with which return lifting of the stopper (3) is prevented. <IMAGE>
