PURPOSE:To perform KANA (Japanese syllabary)/KANJI (Chinese characters) conversion with a simple operation without increasing the memory capacity, by storing the conversion identifying data in the specific idle position of a memory part where the grammar data on a dictionary memory means is stored. CONSTITUTION:When a phonetical read mode is supplied with the operation of a key on a keyboard 12, this key data is sent to a CPU 1. The CPU 1 retrieves the address of a floppy disk based on said key data to read the corresponding KANJI data as well as the corresponding grammar data. Then '0' is stored in the final bit of the idle data part of No.4 of a grammar data part corresponding to the KANJI data part. Thus a KANJI display mode is shown. Thus the CPU 1 identifies said final bit to decide the KANJI display and retrieves the character pattern address of the corresponding KANJI data out of a KANJI pattern memory 6 to output it to a CRT control circuit 7.
