PURPOSE:To produce an electrode which is small in chlorine overvoltage and good in durability by using rutile-type composite oxide having a prescribed composition as a coating having electrode catalytic activity for an anode for especially electrolyzing brine by an ion exchange membrane method. CONSTITUTION:Electrically-conductive metal having corrosion resistance such as Ti is used as an electrically-conductive base material and the base material is properly subjected to surface cleaning treatment and the coating having electrode catalytic activity is formed thereon. The coating is composite oxide basically consisting of 25-50mol% Ru oxide, 75-30mol% total of In oxide and Sn oxide and 1-20mol% Ti oxide. Therefore a rutile-type composite oxide. Chlorine overvoltage is made small by Ru oxide and both Sn oxide and In oxide similarly have the action lowly maintaining chlorine overvoltage as a promotor and also durability of the electrode is enhanced by Ti oxide. Therefore the following electrode is obtained wherein chlorine overvoltage is extremely small and the coating enriched in resistance to alkalis and resistance to acids is strongly and closely stuck thereon.
