PURPOSE:To obtain a gel entrapping an enzymically active substance, by bringing a sol prepared by adding the enzymically active substance to a solution of a water-soluble salt of CMC into contact with a solution containing metallic ions capable of forming a water-insoluble salt with the CMC. CONSTITUTION:An enzymically active substance consisting of a microorganism, small pieces, culture fluid thereof or purified or semi-purified enzymic pharmaceutical thereof is added to a solution of a water-soluble sodium salt, potassium salt or ammonium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) having a viscosity within the range of about 20-5,000cP in 1% concentration at 25 deg.C to give a sol, which is then treated with a solution containing bi- of polyvalent metallic ions capable of forming a water-insoluble salt with CMC, e.g. Ca<2+>, Mg<2+>, Cu<2+>, Ba<2+>, Zn<2+>, Fe<2+>, Al<3+>, Fe<3+>, etc., preferably Ca<2+> or Al<3+> to initiate exchange reaction, crosslink and cause gelation.
