PURPOSE:To reduce the capacity of management information storing memory and to save the labor of control information maintenance by dividing data and a managing area into the same number of blocks and making one block of the divided data correspond to the block of the divided control area. CONSTITUTION:A disk memory area consists of protection areas 50, 53, a data area 51 and a managing area 52 and a normal sector area and a substitutive sector are are prepared at every cluster 56. The areas 51, 52 are divided into blocks 0-n and respective block numbers correspond to each other. For instance, the management information constituted of a defective sector address of an area 51 with a block No.k and a constitutive sector address corresponding to said sector address is recorded in the corresponding area 52 with the block No.k and the management information of the area 51 with a block No. other than the block No.k is not recorded in the area 52 with the block No.k. Since the data and the managing area are divided into (n+1) blocks, management information volume for one block is reduced into 1/n+1 as compared to no division, so that the capacity of the control information storing memory can be reduced up to 1/n+1 and the labor of maintenance of the management information can be saved.
