PURPOSE:To reduce the number of magnetic heads and to provide a video tape recorder with an editing function by using a monitor head as monitoring and preceding reading. CONSTITUTION:A rotary drum 12 is rotated in an arrow (a) direction under the status that a magnetic tape 1 is wound around guide posts 11a, 11b of a video tape recorder (VTR), recording heads 13A, 13B opposed to each other by 180 deg. and recording heads 14A, 14B reversely opposed to each other by 180 deg. are arranged on the head 12. The monitoring heads 15A, 15B and 17A, 17B for scanning double-recorded tracks are arranged on the positions advanced from the heads 13A, 14A by 90 deg. in the rotational direction. The heads 15B, 17B are fixed on bimorph plates 16, 18 to be head driving mechanisms. The heads 13A, 13B, 14A, 14B are used as recording heads and the heads 15A, 15B, 17A, 17B are used as the monitoring heads 3 and the preceding reading heads 4, so that the number of heads can be reduced.
