<p>PURPOSE:A serum-free or low serum culture medium, containing bacteria, preferably an extract of bacterial cells of the genus Clostridium or Staphylococcus and suitable as a culture medium for cultivating human and animal cells. CONSTITUTION:Insulin in 0.1-10mug/ml concentration and epidermal growth factor in 1-100ng/ml concentration are added to a basal culture medium normally used for cultivating animal cells, e.g. Minimum Essential Medium, and an extract (<=5,000 average molecular weight) of microbial cells of Clostridium perfringens or Staphylococcus aureus in a concentration within the range of 10-100mug/ml is further added to remarkably promote the growth of cells derived from animals. A cell growth state almost similar to that in a culture medium containing 10% added serum is obtained by further adding about 1.0-2.0% serum.</p> |
