PURPOSE:To reduce the size of the structure of a detection part and to detect the position of an objective body with high resolution by forming the image of the objective body on an end surface of a multicore fiber formed by arraying plural optical fiber cores linearly. CONSTITUTION:The output light of an optical transmitter 1 illuminates the optical fiber 6 installed on a moving base 8 as the objective body. The image of its tip end part 16 is expanded by a lens system 10 and formed on the end surface 12 of the multicore fiber 11 which has the linear array structure. The fiber core 13 is coupled optically with the photodetector 4 at the other end 14 of the fiber 11. The detector 4 is therefore capable of detecting variation in the quantity of photodetection of the fiber core array at the terminal of the fiber 11. Further, the position of the tip part 16 can be detected with resolution of about 1mum from the diameter and array pitch of the core 13. Consequently, the tip part 16 is accurately positioned at the light beam convergence point of an optical fiber excitation system.
