PURPOSE:To obtain in high yield the titled polymer of narrow molecular weight distribution and furthermore, its high-molecular weight analogue at industrially advantageous high temperatures, by polymerization of an alkenyl ether in the presence of a specific organoaluminum compound and oxygen-contg. compound. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer can be obtained by polymerization, nor mally in a solvent pref. at <=50 deg.C, of an alkenyl ether of formula CHR<1>=CH (OR<2>) (R<1> is H or methyl, R<2> is monovalent organic group) (e.g. methyl vinyl ether), in the presence of an organoaluminum compound of formula R<3>mAlXn (R<3> is monovalent organic group; X is halogen; m and n are each such number as to satisfy relationships; m+n=3, 0<=m<=3 and 0<n<=3, respectively) (e.g. ethylaluminum chloride) and an oxygen-contg. compound (pref. an ester such as ethyl acetate).
