PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an anti-inflammatory drug, an antirheumatic agent and an analgesic antipyretic industrially advantageously, by hydrolyzing acetoxy-benzopyrano-pyridin-yl-butenenitrile. CONSTITUTION:2-Acetoxy-3-(5H-[ 1 ]benzopyrano[ 2,3-b ]pyridin-7-yl)-2-buteneni trile shown by formula I is usually dissolved in a solvent such as methanol, ethanol, etc., and hydrolyzed under a basic condition such as about 3 normal aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide to give the aimed compound shown by formula II. The starting raw material shown by the formula I is a novel sub stance and obtained by reacting 7-acetyl-5H-[1]benzopyrano[2,3-b]pyridine shown by formula III with a halogenated acetonitrile to form a novel substance, introducing a hydrogen chloride gas to the novel substance to subject an epoxide to ring opening and heat-treating the resultant substance with an acetylating agent.
