PURPOSE:To obtain an EC element having a large concn. range without exfoliation of an iridium oxide film which is used as an oxidation coloring layer by successively impressing AC potential dividedly in three periods under specific conditions to a metallic iridium film, thereby forming the above-mentioned film. CONSTITUTION:The impression of the AC potential to the metallic iridium film is successively executed by dividing the same to the 1st period, 2nd period and 3rd period at the time of sweeping the triangular wave potential to a glass cell by an anodic oxidation method to form the iridium oxide film to be used as the oxidation coloring layer of the EC element. The lowest potential in the 1st period is lower than the potential of the 2nd period and the impression time is substantially shorter than the 2nd period. The AC potential lower than the potential in the 2nd period is impressed at least once in the 3rd period. The sweep potential width of the AC potential to be impressed in the 1st period is preferably -0.6-1.25V, the sweep potential width of the AC potential to be impressed in the 2nd period -0.25-1.25V and the sweep potential width of the AC potential to be impressed in the 3rd period -1.5-2.0V.
