PURPOSE:To provide the titled novel copolymer consisting of a specific structure having organic silicon on side chain, suitable as a flame-retardant owing to fame-retarding property, capable of forming a functional polymer taking advantage of the Si atom in the side chain and useful as an oxygen-permeable membrane, etc. CONSTITUTION:A monomer of formula I R1-R5 are H, 1-10C alkyl, aryl or aralkyl) and a monomer of formula II (Y and Z are H, 1-10C hydrocarbon group, cyano, etc.) are copolymerized preferably at 50-100 deg.C for 1-100hr to obtain the objective copolymer composed of the polymer units of formula III and formula IV and having a molecular weight of 5,000-200,000. The monomer of formula I can be produced e.g. by lithiating the methyl group of vinyltoluene with a specific organic Li compound and adding an oxirane compound and a chlorosilane compound to the reaction system. The above polymerization is preferably carried out in the presence of a polymerization initiator such as benzoyl peroxide.
