A water-soluble acrylamide polymer comprising at least 10 per cent by weight of acrylamide chemically combined with from 0 to 90 per cent by weight of at least one other monoethylenically unsaturated organic compound copolymerizable therewith and having an appreciable amount of monomeric acrylamide intimately associated therewith is treated, to reduce the amount of such monomer, with at least one nitrogen compound comprising ammonia or a primary or a secondary amine having a solubility of at least 1 gram thereof in 30 ml. of water at 25 DEG C. The polymer may be polyacrylamide or a water-soluble copolymer of acrylamide with acrylic or methacrylic acid, vinyl benzyltrimethylammonium chloride, vinyl acetate or chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate or methacrylate or styrene. Suitable amines are methyl-, ethyl-, butyl-, dimethyl-, diethyl-, cyclohexyl-, ethanol-, diethanol-, isopropanol- and benzyl-amine and morpholine.
