PURPOSE:To provide a wet frictional material which has a high stable coefficient of friction and excellent energy absorptivity and can retain a stable coefficient of friction over a long period of time, by using an epoxidized polybutadiene-modified phenolic resin as a binder. CONSTITUTION:A resol type phenolic resin (A) of formula I (wherein R is H, an alkyl or allyl; R' is H or -CH2OH; and m and n are each a number of 0-10) is reacted with an epoxidized polybutadiene (B) of formula II (wherein the sum of x, y and z is a number of 20-40), obtd. by reacting a polybutadiene polymer with a peroxide, to modify the component A with the component B. Base materials for a frictional material are bonded to each other by using the modified phenolic resin as an essential ingredient for a binder to produce a wet frictional material. The obtained material is suitable for use as an oil- immersed clutch facing of an automobile.
