PURPOSE:To obtain a polymer liquid crystal useful as a functional material such as an optical material, an electrooptical material or an optoelectronic material, by using an organic polymer containing a specified conjugated system in each repeating unit of the main chain as a component. CONSTITUTION:An organic polymer liquid crystal having repeating units of formula I and a number-average MW of 3,000-70,000. In the formula, m>=2 and n>=1, m represents the length of the conjugated system and it is preferable from its function of increasing a nonlinear optical susceptivity that m is larger, but on the contrary, it is preferable from easiness of synthesis that it is smaller. The value of m is determined from the viewpoint of the function to be utilized, easiness of synthesis, etc. Usually it is preferably that 10>=m>=2, especially, m=2. Said polymer liquid crystal can be synthesized by directly esterifying a dicarboxylic acid compound of formula II (wherein m>=2) with an oxyethylene chain-containing diol compound of formula III (wherein n>=1).
