The present invention relates to a plant transformation vector which is capable of transforming monocots and dicots. The plant transformation vector comprises the Mu1 element and foreign DNA. The vector may further contain a marker. The foreign DNA and/or marker is positioned entirely within the Mu1 element or adjacent the Mu1 element. The present invention also relates to a recombinant vector useful for transforming plants which contains a DNA insert consisting essentially of the Mu1 element.
