PURPOSE:To obtain an image information in which a major image only is made conspicuous by synthesizing an image information of a prescribed gradation and an image information whose density difference is compressed, and outputting and recording the result in a recording medium. CONSTITUTION:For instance an image of a character is placed on the original platen of a color reader 1 and a density compression button 304 is depressed, then a CPU 301 turns a selector 203 to S-side to store an image information in the buffer memory 201 of an image processing circuit 200. Then, the image of a landscape to be the background is placed on the original platen, and the button 304 is depressed again, accordingly the image information is stored in a buffer memory 202. Image density information are sequentially read out from the memories 201 and 202. A normal gamma conversion is applied to major image information by a gamma-correction circuit 204, but to the background image information, such a gamma conversion that the density of an input image information is compressed by selecting a density compression characteristic by means of switches 305 and 306 is applied by a gamma-correction circuit 205. The image information is synthesized by an OR circuit 208 through dither circuits 206 and 207.
