PURPOSE:To improve reliability through reduction of repeated twist stress exerted on the joint part of an eccentric shaft, by a method wherein a cylinder resting in a specified running region forms a cylinder related to a rotor on the output side. CONSTITUTION:A first eccentric shaft 13, supporting a rotor 11 of second and third cylinders 9 and 10, has its rear end 13a set on the output side, and a fly wheel 30 is attached thereon. Meanwhile, a second eccentric shaft 14, supporting the rotor 11 of a first cylinder 8, has its rear end 14a engaged externally of a taper part 13b, formed on the intermediate outer periphery in the axial direction of the first eccentric shaft 13, for coupling to form a joint part 15. In which case, in a specified running region centering around a middle speed middle load region, only a fuel injection valve 20 of the third cylinder 10 is rendered inoperative through the working of a control unit 25, and control valves 21 and 21 are closed to effect reduced number of cylinders running which brings the third cylinder 10 into a resting state. This constitution reduces the occurrence of a fluctuation in torque produced resulting from working and rest of the third cylinder 10 and transmitted to the joint part 15.
