NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are 1-10C alkyl which may be substituted with OH, lower alkoxy, carbalkoxy, etc.; one of R1 and R2 may be H). USE:An intermediate for animal drugs. PREPARATION:Diketene of formula II is dripped to monoethanolamine diluted with an inert solvent such as methanol and maintained at -10-0 deg.C. After the completion of dripping, the components are made to react at 30-40 deg.C for 1.5-3hr to obtain N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-acetoacetamide of formula III. Excess ammonia gas is blown into the product at <= room temperature for 30min-1.5hr to obtain a compound of formula I wherein one of R1 and R2 is CH2CH2OH and the other is H.
