PURPOSE:To improve the operability and the copy productivity by automatically discriminating whether the sort mode is set or not to perform the copy processing in a copying machine provided with an automatic document feeder ADF and a sorter. CONSTITUTION:In the copying machine provided with a sorter 10 which ejects a copy paper ejected from a device body 1 by carrying roller 11 and a deflecting claw 12 and an ADF 20 carries and holds the document, which is sent on a carrying belt 21 from an original platen 22 by a feeding roll 23, to and in the prescribed position of a contact glass, a document set detecting sensor 24 is turned on to automatically set the ADF mode when the document is set to the ADF 20 through an ADF key is not selected. When the ADF mode is set though a sort mode key is not selected, the number of copies is checked, and the sort mode is automatically set if the set number is two or more. Thus, the operability is improved and the copy productivity is improved because an unnecessary sorting operation is not performed and the automatic processing is performed in accordance with the number of documents and the number of copies.
