PURPOSE:To provide good engine braking effect in the whole car speed ranges by setting the target number of revolutions of a stepless speed changer when the engine load is substantially zero, to a level higher than that during low load operation, and by setting it as a function of car speed having a specific inclination. CONSTITUTION:A control unit 101 controls the speed change ratio of a stepless speed changer 4 installed in the drive system of an engine 1. That is, on the basis of detection signals from sensors 102-109 to sense the operating conditions of engine 1, the unit 101 controls the speed change ratio so that the number of revolutions of input shaft 81 of said stepless speed changer 4 will become a target value corresponding to the engine load 1 in accordance with the degree of opening etc. of a throttle valve 9. Here the target number of revolutions when engine load is substantially zero, is set larger than that during low load operation, and set as a function of car speed. This function is set so that its gradient becomes large in the low speed range.
