PURPOSE:To simplify a method of evaluation and to improve workability by forming a light source having a prescribed wavelength characteristic by using multi-layered dielectric films and using such light source as incident light of an optical multiplexer and demultiplexer thereby evaluating the insertion loss of the optical multiplexer and demultiplexer. CONSTITUTION:The multi-layered dielectric films 2 having the function to multiplex and demultiplex light signals are disposed to one side face of a rectangular parallelpiped block 1 consisting of glass, etc., to constitute the optical multiplexer and demultiplexer. The light source 5 for which the multi-layered dielectric films, etc., are used is made to enter such block 1 from an arrow A direction to symmetrize the light power emitted from a terminal lambda1 and the characteristic possessed by the block 1. The easy discrimination of the optical multiplexing and demultiplexing characteristic (b) when the insertion loss is good, the case (c) when the insertion loss of the lens is large and the case (d) when a wavelength shift arises is permitted in the case of evaluating the insertion loss of the optical multiplexer and demultiplexer. The workability is thus improved.
