PURPOSE:To attain a device useful for user who has not necessarily learned a foreign laguage by making available a mother tongue and foreign laguage converting function during the formation of a foreign laguage document, by a simple changeover of a mode. CONSTITUTION:During the drive of a system, a CPU14 clears a text buffer 17 and a translation buffer 21 and sets an input device 15 to an English input mode. While a special key 23 is not pressed in the English input mode, the CPU14 sets input buffer character data to the text buffer 17 by the input of a character. When an operator presses the special key 23, the CPU sets space character data to the text buffer 17, changes over the input device 15 to a Japanese input mode and clears the translation buffer 21.
