PURPOSE:To obtain the titled membrane which is remarkably high in permselectivity of sulfur dioxide and capable of using in the separation of sulfur dioxide from gaseous mixture such as air, purification and concentration by using phenylsulfinyl ethylcellulose. CONSTITUTION:Phenylsulfinyl ethylcellulose shown in a formula I is used and this cellulose derivative is obtained by allowing cellulose to react with phenylvinylsulfoxide in the presence of an alkali catalyst. At this time, the range within 0.1-50mol phenylvinylsulfoxide is used for 1mol glucose unit contained in cellulose and the reaction is performed at 10-50 deg.C in an aq. soln. contg. 5-40wt% alkali catalyst. After using a soln. wherein this derivative is dissolved in a proper solvent, casing this soln. and forming a coated film, the solvent is dried and removed.
