PURPOSE:To recognize the memory capacity just by designating the read of the memory capacity information on a setting means after adding said setting means for memory capacity information to a memory card containing the memory of optional capacity. CONSTITUTION:A card using device 30 transfers a control command to a control circuit 18 in a memory card 10 via a control bus 32 to designate the read of data given from a memory capacity setting circuit 17. The transferred control command is decoded. When said command designates the reading of the data on a memory 11 received from the circuit 17, the circuit 18 reads out the read control signal and outputs it to the circuit 17 via a control line 21. The circuit 17 outputs the memory capacity information on the memory 11 onto a data bus 31. Then the device 30 reads the memory capacity information on the memory 11 of a memory card 10 out of the bus 31. Thus the memory capacity of the card 10 is correctly recognized.
