The subject-matter of the invention is a method for measuring depressions in surfaces, in particular the volume of engraving cells in printing areas, in accordance with which a microscope directed on to a depression is focused in steps on to a sequence of contour planes between the base and rim of the depression, the images thus obtained are converted optoelectrically into a matrix of pixels and the pixels are stored digitally, the pixels which correspond to the parts, imaged sharply in a contour plane, of the surface of the depression are identified as points of maximum contrast relative to adjacent pixels, and these pixels are summed after multiplication by a magnitude corresponding to the distance of their plane from the rim plane of the depression.
