PURPOSE:To enable a position locating method employing a microcomputer even in a line containing a joint, by detecting an induced pulse from the joint using the third phase of a cable to subtract this pulse from a measuring pulse. CONSTITUTION:A first phase 1 as phase to be measured of three phases of H cables 1, 2 and 3 each having a joint J and a second phase 2 as pulse return phase thereof are connected together at father ends 1b and 2b through a connection capacitor Ck and an amplifier A to detect a partial discharge pulse, which will be generated with the application of a voltage to the first phase 1, at a measuring end 1a of the first phase 1 and a measuring end 2a of the second phase 2 while a induced pulse from a joint J is detected at a measuring end 3a of a third phase 3 as antenna phase. Then, a difference is taken between the induced pulse and the pulse detected at the measuring end 2a of the second phase 2, a partial discharge pulse alone is taken out of the pulses detected at the measuring end 2a of the second phase 2 and then, a difference in the propagation time between the partial discharge pulse and the pulse detected at the measuring end 1a of the first phase 1 is read out with a microcomputer M to locate the position where a partial discharge is generated.
