PURPOSE:To perform automatic processing at a high speed, by a method wherein fine particles are analyzed on the basis of preset characteristics or a combination thereof at a high speed and the images of individual fine particles analyzed are picked up. CONSTITUTION:A cell suspension and a sheath liquid are respectively supplied to a flow chamber 3 from feeders 1, 2 and the cells flowing through a water stream are irradiated with laser beam and the optical signals from the cells reach a half mirror 5 through a microscope objective lens 4 and a part thereof is passes through a relay lens 6, dichroic mirror 7, filters 8, 9 and photomultiplier tubes 10, 11 to be inputted to a signal processor 18. A part of the optical signals reaches a streak camera 14 from the mirror 5 through a filter 12 and a projection lens 13. The output of the camera 14 is guided to a streak image pickup apparatus 17 and the image thereof is picked up by the apparatus 17 to be inputted to the signal processor 18.
