An armature winding is proposed a closed lap winding for commutator motors and generators having a plurality of pole pairs, which armature winding consists of a number of coil units (1-6), each coil unit (in the case of a four-layer winding) having as many coils as there are poles in the armature winding, and in the case of a two-layer winding, the number of coils per coil unit corresponds to the number of pole pairs in the armature winding, and the coil units are arranged in a sequence in the armature slots and are also connected in this sequence to the commutator webs, as well as being connected by means of link circuits (repeating the sequence on the commutator) to further commutator webs, in the case of such a construction only two armature branches are always formed (in the case of a single-conductor armature winding and in the case of all arrangements of numbers of pole pairs) as a result of which only two brushes (16-17) are also ever required. <IMAGE>
