An automatic packaging system contains at least one deflecting station (14). In the deflecting station (14), individual articles are brought from a rectilinear movement onto a circular path. The articles (15) possess a thickness which is appreciable in relation to the radius of the circular path. As soon as the articles come onto the circular path, they are transported at a constant angular speed, so that their outside has a higher path speed. So that the articles do not undergo distortions and warpings, provision is made for them to be driven in the deflecting station on their inside only and, in the region upstream of the deflecting station, to be releasable from the belt driving them. For this purpose, there can be provided a suction device (33), in which a lower negative pressure prevails than inside the suction roller (25). <IMAGE>
