PURPOSE:To obtain the titled resin, consisting of specific repeating units and having a specific value or above of intrinsic viscosity and improved dielectric characteristics, etc., by polycondensing a dihalodiphenyl sulfone with a dihydroxy-diphenyl-diphenyl sulfone in the presence of an alkali. CONSTITUTION:Substantially equimolar amounts of a 4,4'-dihalodiphenyl sulfone, e.g. 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone, etc., and a 4,4'-dihydroxy-3,3'-diphenyl-diphenyl sulfone are polycondensed in the presence of an alkali, preferably an alkali metal (bi)carbonate to afford the aimed phenyl-substituted aromatic polyether sulfone, consisting of repeating units expressed by the formula and having >=0.15 intrinsic viscosity. The latter of the starting raw materials is a novel substance and can be produced by condensing o-phenylphenol with concentrated sulfuric acid.
