PURPOSE:To enable shortening of printing time and increasing of printing quantity without increasing the winding diameter of a scroll at a pay-out side by providing an outer diameter detecting means for an ink ribbon and reducing the winding quantity upon increase of the winding diameter of take-up core. CONSTITUTION:A cassette 13 houses an ink ribbon having single color sections Y, M, C of different color in the longitudinal direction in that order with identification marks 1, 2, 3, respectively attached to the head sections thereof. The drive shaft 25 of a take-up core 16 is coupled to a drive means 26 contained in a carriage 11. Said drive means 26 executes winding for moving the head section of a single color section to be printed next to the front of a printing head 12 when the carriage 11 returns to the starting position. This lead-in quantity of said single color section is equivalent to a ribbon pass quantity extending from the detecting position of a detector 22 to the printing head, and it is controlled by the number of pulses to be outputted from a pulse generator 27 which is operated by a detection signal from the detector 22 generated by detecting one of said identification marks 1-3.
