PURPOSE:To eliminate a flicker on a screen, to prevent crosstalk from occurring, and to facilitate interlacing by driving a projection type color display device while matrix type display panels for even and odd fields are inverted in phase. CONSTITUTION:A video signal VIDEO is so modulated to alternate in constant cycles which each correspond to one frame of the NTSC system of television, and a signal GS for even fields and signals KS for odd fields which are applied to light valves are converted in opposite phase relation. A sample holding signal SA samples video data in a sample holding time DELTAt while one field which is a half one frame is set to a constant period and holds the data with the time constant of liquid crystal. The held signal becomes a voltage VGS applied to the liquid crystal of an even light valve and a voltage VKS applied to the liquid crystal of an add light valve and they are in opposite phase relation between those valves. Consequently, a flicker is eliminated and the picture quality is improved.
