PURPOSE:To obtain a fluorescent material having remarkably shortened afterglow without lowering fluorescent intensity, by adding a small amount of Nd and Sc to a fluorescent material composed of a rare earth metal oxysulfide doped with Ce-containing Tb. CONSTITUTION:The objective fluorescent material is produced by compounding (A) 1mol of a fluorescent material of formula (R is Y, La, Gd or Lu; 5X10<-4=w<=1X10<-1>; 1X10<-8=x<=1X10<-4>) with (B) 1X10<-8>-1X10<-4>mol of Nd2O2S and/or Sc2O2S. The fluorescent material can be produced by adding sulfur to the oxides of the R element and metals such as Tb, Ce, Sc, Nd, etc., finely pulverizing the raw materials to obtain a uniform mixture of the raw materials and calcining the mixture.
