PURPOSE:To obtain phenylsulfinylethylcellulose having a high permselectivity for sulfur dioxide gas, by reacting cellulose with phenyl vinyl sulfoxide in the presence of an alkali catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Phenylsulfinylethylcellulose of formula II is produced by reacting cellulose with phenyl vinyl sulfoxide of formula I in the presence of an alkali catalyst. In the formula, a plurality of X groups may be the same or different and are each H or a phenylsulfinylethyl group of formula III and the average degree of substitution by phenylsulfinylethyl of formula II per glucose unit is at least 0.05 and n is the number of repeating glucose units. As said alkali catalyst, sodium hydroxide is usually advantageous in respect of economy.
