Motor drive unit (11) for use with an atherectomy device has a flexible drive cable (57) and a finger operated member (51) for advancing and retracting the drive cable (57). The drive unit comprises a motor (13) and a power supply (26) mounted in a case (12) of a size which fits comfortably in a human hand, with a power switch (31) positioned for operation by a finger of the hand holding the case (12). When the motor (13) is connected to the drive cable (57), the finger operated member (51) can be operated by a finger of the hand holding the case (12) to advance and retract the cable (57) and a cutter connected thereto.
