PURPOSE:To enable a facsimile to recognize a character area, or a picture area, when the facsimile scans an original picture, by enclosing either the character area or the picture area of the original picture in which a picture and a character are mixed, with a color frame line, and transmitting character information after separating the character area, as a character code, separately from other picture signal. CONSTITUTION:A frame 3 at the left end of the first row is recognized, and a switching part 11 selects a character reading part 12. And the character information within the frame is transmitted after being changed to a character code signal, adding a label signal representing that it is a character signal. When the scan is progressd a frame line at the right side enclosing the character area is recognized, the switching part 11 selects a picture processing part 14, and the picture signal is transmitted, while adding the label signal representing that it is the picture signal. The same operation is performed at a time when the scan of the next row is performed after completing the scan of the first row. Thus the signal in which the area in the inside of the frame line, and an outside area are distinguished, is sent. Also, so that the information sent actually is supplied from a transmission scanning part A where the color of the frame line is not recognized, it is possible to prevent the frame line from being transmitted.
