PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as a monomer for polymers inexpensively in a few processes, by reacting methyl 2-trifluoromethyl 3,3,3- trifluoropropanoate as a raw material with formaldehyde in the presence of an amine. CONSTITUTION:Methyl 2-trifluoromethyl-3,3,3-trifluoropropanate as a raw material is reacted with form aldehyde in the presence of an amine such as triethylamine, ethylenediamine, etc., at 30-200 deg.C, preferably 50-150 deg.C to give the aimed compound. The molar ratio of the preparation of the raw material and formaldehyde is 1:1-1:10, preferably 1:1-1:5 and the amount of the amine used is 1-50mol, preferably 1-20mol based on 1mol raw material. The raw material, for example, is obtained by hydrolyzing 1-methoxy-1,1-difluoro-2- trifluoromethyl-3,3,3-trifluoropropane.
