PURPOSE:To correctly execute the positioning of a magnetic head without fail by providing a dividing means to divide the position of a magnetic head with the change of a magnetic flux detected by the magnetic head and a driving control means to drive and control a shifting means based on the position divided by the dividing means. CONSTITUTION:When a magnetic head 2 is shifted in the direction to cross respective tracks to magnetic recording medium 1 to form alternately a magnetic track and a nonmagnetic track by a shifting means 3, the level of the reproducing output signal of the magnetic head 2 is different when the magnetic track is passed through and when the nonmagnetic track is passed through, at the time of shifting. A dividing means 4 counts the number of passing of the magnetic track and the nonmagnetic track and divides the position of the magnetic head 2 based on the change of the reproducing output signal. A driving control means 5 controls the shifting means 3 and shifts the magnetic head 2 to the prescribed magnetic track based on the position divided by the dividing means 4. Thus, the information of the positioning of the magnetic head can be obtained and based on the information, the positioning can be correctly executed without fail.
