PURPOSE:To permit the effective retrieval of the waste heat of exhaust gas of combustion as well as the smooth and safe continuation of combustion process by a method wherein the exhaust gas of combustion is ventilated through a packed layer constituted of fillers made of metal or ceramics or small stones to heat the layer while heat, absorbed by the packed layer, is radiated against a combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:An air preheater 2 and a packed layer 4 constituted of metallic or ceramics granular fillers 3 are provided in a combustion furnace 1 in sequence from the upper part to the lower part thereof. The exhaust gas (c) of combustion flows into the packed layer 4 and is cooled by exchanging heat with fillers 3, thereafter, is discharged into the atmosphere after exchanging heat with combustion air (a) by the air preheater 2. The ceramics of beta-SiC or ZrB2, the ceramics of glass, mortar, refractory bricks or the like or small stones, which are excellent in heat transfer property, mechanical property (especially in impact strength) under a high temperature and chemical stabilities, are employed for the fillers 3. According to this method, the sensitive heat of the exhaust gas (c) is retrieved simply and efficiently, the temperature in a combustion chamber 6 is maintained at a high temperature by returning the exhaust gas (c) into the combustion chamber and incinerating process may be continued without causing any trouble even when adhesive dust is generated.
