PURPOSE:To prevent the intrusion of oxygen, alkaline salt, etc., into a thin layer for magneto-optical recording by providing the thin layer contg. Pt or Pd between thin layers contg. a rare earth transition metal. CONSTITUTION:The 1st protective layer 3, the magneto-optical recording layer 4 and the 2nd protective layer 5 are successively formed on a transparent sub strate 2. This magneto-optical recording layer 4 is formed by alternately laminat ing magnetic layers 6 and nonmagnetic layers 7. The magnetic layers 6 are the layers contg. the rare earth transition metal and the nonmagnetic layers 7 are the layers essentially consisting of Pt or Pd. The generation of pinholes and cracks in the magneto-optical recording layer is prevented and a pit error rate is improved by the thin films contg. Pt or Pd.
