The invention relates to the preparation of esters or salts of aromatic or heteroaromatic acids of formula (I): Y-Ar-CO-OR (I) where: Ar represents an aromatic group or an heteroaromatic nucleus, Y represents one to five substituents that may be equal or different and are chosen among hydrogen; halogen; alkyl group; alkoxy group; ester group -COOR' where R' is alkyl; hydroxyl phenyloxy optionally substituted; trifluoromethyl; nitrile; amidic group (-CONH2); acetamidic group (-NH-CO-CH3) or acyl group -CO-R" where R" represents a C1-C8 hydrocarbon; R represents an alkyl group R1 having up to 5 carbon atoms or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. The esters and salts of formula (I) that can be used in the preparation of alkidic resins of dyes, pigments or azo-dyes and in the field of plasticizing agents, are obtained by reaction of a halide of formula Y-Ar-X (II) where Ar and Y have the hereinabove defined meanings and X is Cl, Br or I, with carbon monoxide in an alcoholic solvent of formula R1OH (where R1 is an alkyl group at atmospheric pressure and at temperatures ranging between -10.degree. and 60.degree.C in the presence of an acidity-acceptor compound and of a catalyst constituted by a cobalt complex having formula (III): Z - Co(CO)4 (III) where Z is a group chosen among CH3; CH2F; CHF2; CF3; CH2-CN; CH2-COOR'", where R'" is an alkyl group having up to 8 carbon atoms or a benzene group optionally substituted with groups inert under reaction conditions; CH2-Ar' where Ar' is an aromatic group constituted by from one to three benzene rings optionally condensed and optionally substituted with groups inert under reaction conditions.
