PURPOSE:To measure the plate thickness of a steel plate, etc., continuously without using any contacting medium by providing a slay, an ultrasonic wave propagating material, an ultrasonic vibrator, etc. CONSTITUTION:The slay 3 made of wear-resisting rubber has a flat reverse surface, both ends of which are curved arcuately. the hemispherical ultrasonic wave propagating material 4 made of butadiene rubber is buried in the slay 3 and part of the reverse surface of the propagating material 4 is exposed in the reverse surface of the slay 3. Further, the ultrasonic vibrator 5 is fitted on the top surface of the propagating material 4. The slay 3 is applied to an objective of inspection and the vibrator 5 is put in operation, so that an ultrasonic wave is radiated to a moving steel plate 6 through the propagating material 4. Consequently, the plate thickness of the steel plate 6 is measured continuously. Even if the top surface of the steel plate 6 has slight projections and recesses, on the other hand, the reverse surface of the slay 3 and the top surface of the steel plate 6 slide smoothly and the slay 3 never wear away in a short time owing to friction against the top surface of the steel plate 6.
