PURPOSE:To manufacture a liquid-crystal display element which utilizes a large- size and large-capacity field controlling double-refraction effect and is uniform in cell thickness, small in hue difference, and high in displaying quality at a high yield, by uniformly scattering a specific number of high polymeric spherical bodies of the same size on a plane. CONSTITUTION:After coating two transparent base plates 12a and 12b provided with plural transparent electrodes 13a and 13b intersecting each other at right angles with polyimide resin 14a and 14b, a rubbing process is performed on the base plates 12a and 12b. After rubbing, same-sized high polymeric powder 11 is scattered on one of the base plates 12a and 12b at a rate of 50-500/mm<2>. By using the base plates, a liquid cell with a spiral angle formed by the spiral structure of its liquid-crystal molecules of 150 deg.-300 deg. is produced. To this cell, two polarizing plates 19a and 19b are installed in parallel with each other in such a way that their transmission axes can be set at angles of 20 deg.-70 deg. against the oriented direction of the liquid-crystal molecules. Therefore, a liquid- crystal display element which is uniform in cell thickness, excellent in displaying quality, and small in in-plane hue unevenness and utilizes a large-size and large- capacity field controlling double-refraction effect can be manufactured.
